You don't. Anyone can use BT Exchanges to search for people and businesses, store details, view customer ratings and find places on the map. However, if you want to get the most from the service, such as saving your contacts, building up a comprehensive list of contacts (unregistered users can only store a maximum of 10 items), create, share and publish plans, rate businesses and a whole lot more, you will need to register. It only takes a few minutes and BT will never share your details with other organisations.
Plans can be as big or as small as you wish. To get started you'll need to register and then carry out your first search. For example, if you're planning a wedding you can search for wedding venues and then save the suitable results by clicking 'add to plan'. You will then get the chance to name your plan and add further details to it.
Easy, just select the people you want to share your plan with from your contacts list and they will be able to access the details, and add to them too.
When your plan is complete, simply select 'publish plan' and everyone will be able to see the full details on BT Exchanges.
Again, you will need to be logged in. Simply carry out the search for the relevant business and then click on 'rate this business'. Five stars would be 'excellent' down to one star for 'could do better'.
Click on the map link attached to all results listings to go straight to the location. You can zoom in and out for a more detailed result and get directions to and from the premises. You can also see an aerial view of the area or a combination of both by clicking on 'hybrid'. Clicking the 'view by' map function will present all listings on the page on a map. You can drag to reposition functionality and click on a 'pin' to reveal details for that person or business.
You just have to click on the 'add to notepad' link. You can clear your pad at any time by clicking 'reset'.
One of the new features of BT Exchanges is the card-style listings for businesses. Search results will normally display in this way. However, you can change to a list or map view by clicking the link at the top of the page.
You can filter your results by distance. Just click on the 'filter preferences' and select what you want. For example, you may only want results listed within three miles of your specified location. You can also filter by the call free facility, email, text or website.
Mobile and fax numbers are only listed at customers' request. Exchanges uses source data from a core database to which all licensed telecommunications operators and service providers submit their customers' directory data.
If your service provider is BT and you wish to change your entry, please call us on 0800 800 150. If you have a service provider other than BT you will need to contact them directly to make changes. Once your details have been changed they will be added to the OSIS database for all directory service providers to use in future, including BT.
When you are searching for a type of business, we will give you results in and around the location that you have searched. Where only a few businesses exist for the classification you have searched, we will keep extending the search area until we have matched approximately 50 businesses. For some unusual business types (eg. 'Anchor makers'), a search may return all listings from across the whole of the UK. If you know the name of a business but not its location, you may be able to find it by selecting 'Business name' and searching 'UK' as the location.
Business listings are displayed according to how far they are positioned from the location that you are searching. For example, the nearer a business is to the centre of the specified location, the higher up the results list it will appear. You can change the order that the businesses are listed by selecting the 'Name (A to Z)' link at the top of the results list and this will resort the listings alphabetically. Simply select the 'By distance' link to display listings in proximity order from the centre of where you are searching.
Some businesses will include links directly to their website. Where present, this will be shown in the listing with the link 'visit website'.
Not all businesses choose to be listed in the classified (business by type) database. If you know the name of the business, you may be able to find it with a business name search.
Some customers request that their details are available from BT's voice directory enquiries only. These customers also choose not to appear in printed phone books.
