BT Exchanges FAQs

  • Why Do I Need To Register?

You don't. Anyone can use BT Exchanges to search for people and businesses, store details, view customer ratings and find places on the map. However, if you want to get the most from the service, such as saving your contacts, building up a comprehensive list of contact details (unregistered users can only store a maximum of 10 items), create, share and publish plans, rate businesses and a whole lot more, you will need to register. It only takes a few minutes and BT will never share your details with other organisations.

  • How do I rate a business?

Again, you will need to be logged in. Simply carry out the search for the relevant business and then click on the link in the top right of the listing box. Where a business has already been rated by other users, it will tell you how many reviews have been made and show you the average number of stars the business has been given. If a business has not yet been rated, you will see a link to 'Be the first to review this business'. Five stars would be 'excellent' down to one star for 'could do better'.

  • How do I review a business?

Here are just a few pointers for leaving reviews that will help guide other users as well provide valuable feedback to the businesses you have used

Please be 100% frank and honest about your experience, but remember to never use profanity, hate speech, threats, prejudiced comments, sexually explicit language.

Base your review on personal experience, not second-hand information or hearsay (unverified information, rumours or quotations from other sources).

Give as much information and description as you can, so readers know exactly the service to which you are referring. This is especially true if there are multiple versions of the service (e.g. 24 Hour photo processing versus 7 day photo processing). Include the company name and detail where you purchased the service, if applicable. Remember to list brands and model names or numbers so readers can quickly know exactly which products you are referring to within a given service.

Give the 'whys' of any claims you make, good or bad. Simply stating that a service is a poor or deficient service doesn't help your audience. Other readers need detailed and thorough information as to why or why not the service didn't meet your expectation.

Try to be descriptive when it comes to how the service was presented to you. Describe how you personally found the service and whether or not the company was easy to do business with (e.g. did it take them 10 minutes to answer the phone?). Mention visual and physical features of the product or service

Services delivered by company' often have both positives and negatives, so even if you feel satisfied, you can always list both the pros and cons you found while using the service. A reputable, informative review will provide both views in detail.

Finally, remember that your reviews make a real difference and improve the experiences of both consumers and businesses alike. So if you've used a service which yu found on BT Exchanges, remember to review it!

  • How do I add to the 'My Shortlist'?

You just have to click on the 'Add to My Shortlist' link in the bottom right of a listing. You can clear your Shortlist at any time by clicking 'Clear My Shortlist'.

  • How do I change the way business results are displayed?

One of the new features of BT Exchanges is the map view display option. Search results will normally display in 'List' view, but you can change to a map view by clicking the link at the top of the results.

  • How do I refine or filter search results?

You can refine your search results by the average star rating for a business, the contact options they display in their listing (eg. whether they have a website, email contact address, can be contacted via the Call Free service or have a mobile number) or by the specific business category they are in. Just click on the appropriate tab to the right of 'Refine results by:', which is positioned at the top of the results list.

  • Are residential mobile and/or fax numbers listed?

Mobile and fax numbers are only listed at customers' request. Exchanges uses source data from a core database to which all licensed telecommunications operators and service providers submit their customers' directory data.

  • How can I change my residential details?

If your service provider is BT and you wish to change your entry, please call us on 0800 800 150.

  • Can I search nationally?

When you are searching for a type of business, we will give you results within 15 miles of the centre of the location that you have searched.

  • Can I change the order in which business results are shown?

Business listings are displayed according to how far they are positioned from the location that you are searching. For example, the nearer a business is to the centre of the specified location, the higher up the results list it will appear.

  • How can I view business' website?

Some businesses will include links directly to their website. Where present, this will be shown in the listing with the link 'visit website'.

  • Why can't I find a business I know exists?

Not all businesses choose to be listed in the classified (business by type) database. If you know the name of the business, you may be able to find it with a business name search.

  • Why can I get a number when I dial 118500 but cannot find it on BT Exchanges?

Some customers request that their details are available from BT's voice directory enquiries only. These customers also choose not to appear in printed phone books.
